Career progression

At Grant Thornton, career progression is determined by a system of meritocracy with promotions based purely on merit.

Grant Thornton recognises and rewards staff in line with their abilities and contributions. This system of meritocracy ensures that the pace of each individual's career is determined solely by the individual and their performance.

Meritocracy means that an individual's career progression is determined by their commitment and desire to achieve, rather than the amount of time they have served at any given level. Grant Thornton’s system has seen individuals who have joined the firm as graduates be promoted to Manager in less than five years.

Underlying the firm's system of meritocracy is the structured performance appraisal process. All staff are formally appraised and salary is reviewed every six months. This regular appraisal cycle ensures that individuals are working towards goals that are congruent with the firm’s overall strategic direction.

Ongoing feedback, in addition to the structured six monthly appraisal process, enables staff to mark personal progress and goals. It also serves as a basis for judging eligibility for promotion and establishing future career direction.
