Grant Thornton Partners ‘Unite to Build’ in Cambodia

Grant Thornton’s Partners and Principals participated in Habitat for Humanity Australia's Global Village volunteering program, where 13 teams worked together to build safe and secure housing for 13 disadvantaged families in Cambodia.

This Cambodian build was the third time Grant Thornton has engaged with  Habitat for Humanity Global Village as volunteer house builders. It was the biggest and most impactful yet, with over 150 Partners and Principals working together to build 13 homes in the Khan Prek Pnov area, approximately 25kms from Phnom Penh City. This experience was an opportunity for Grant Thornton’s Partnership to work together to achieve something remarkable and bring to life the firm’s CARE values and purpose to care for its people, clients and communities and supporting them to thrive.

Greg Keith, CEO at Grant Thornton said, “With Unite to Build we have not just created buildings but have constructed family homes which will provide comfort and security for each of the 13 families for generations to come. Thank you to the 13 families who have welcomed us, cared for us, shown us kindness, and shared their life stories with us. It has been an honour to meet our 13 families and work alongside each of them – their work ethic is incomparable – and they have made a difference in our lives too."

“This Unite to Build experience in Cambodia has made me even more proud to be a partner of Grant Thornton. Building homes together alongside these families continues to demonstrate what is special about our firm and its people. As fellow builders, each of our Partners has proven their belief in living our CARE values by demonstrating true care for others.”

Grant Thornton’s first collaboration with Habitat for Humanity was in 2015, when 135 Partners and Principals embarked on a truly life and business changing experience building safe and secure homes for ten disadvantaged families in Cambodia. In 2018, 150 Partners and Principals participated in the firm’s second Habitat for Humanity build in Vietnam to construct 13 homes across the Quang Nam province in Hoi An. Across the three projects its partners have built 36 homes, and in the two projects located in Phnom Penh and Quang Nam contributed over 10,700 hours of labour.

In addition to the Partners swapping out laptops and suits for hardhats and shovels, each participant raised much needed funds to help Habitat for Humanity continue to make a remarkable difference for families in need. Together the Partners were able to raise more funds than their targets and donations went to purchasing materials and supplies for the homes. Over the three builds, Grant Thornton Partners have raised AUD $874,000 in donations which also supports projects on the ground to create long-term, sustainable communities including:

  • Water and sanitation infrastructure such as toilets, wells and community hygiene stations
  • Training sessions led by community members which also provides financial literacy and livelihood training
  • Supporting the creation of small businesses to help families and communities earn more income and thrive
  • Volunteers build just 5 per cent of the homes that Habitat for Humanity provide, so the donations raised across Grant Thornton’s three building projects is enough to build 180 homes.

Habitat for Humanity Australia is part of Habitat for Humanity (HfH), an international not-for-profit with presence in over 70 countries. Their mission is to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Since its inception it has helped more than 35 million people access safe and decent housing, along with access to water, sanitation and hygiene and livelihood training to build better lives. Since 2003, Habitat for Humanity Cambodia has supported over 118,000 Cambodian families to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. This has been made possible through the generosity of volunteers who have raised funds and donated their time to building safe and secure homes.
