Celebrating National Agriculture Day: family farms driving resilience and growth

As Australia marks National Agriculture Day on Friday 21 November 2025, the country celebrates the incredible contribution agriculture and farming make to Australia’s economy and communities.

Many Australian farms remain family-owned and operated, showcasing the resilience and innovation that define the agribusiness sector.

The Grant Thornton Family Business Report highlights succession planning is a key consideration for family farms – not as a challenge alone, but as an opportunity to secure legacies and strengthen governance for generations to come.

According to the report, the main challenges for Australian farms include:

  • Succession planning (30%)
  • Attracting and retaining staff (30%)
  • Economic uncertainty (30%)

While succession can be complex when the family farm is often the largest asset, families across Australia are encouraged to embrace proactive planning and collaboration to ensure continuity.

Kirsten Taylor-Martin, National Head of Family Business Consulting said: “Succession planning is about more than passing on assets – it’s about preserving family values and creating clarity for the future. We’re seeing families take positive steps by engaging in open conversations and implementing governance frameworks such as family charters and advisory boards. These practices not only reduce uncertainty but also foster stronger relationships and shared purpose.”

The report also reveals encouraging trends including:

  • 41% of family businesses have a family charter
  • 88% meet regularly with external advisors
  • 63% embrace mentoring within the family, ensuring transparency and alignment

Grant Thornton’s National Agribusiness, Food & Beverage expert, Cameron Bacon said: “Family farms are the backbone of Australia’s agribusiness sector. Their ability to adapt and remain resilient is remarkable. We’re proud to support farming families with strategies that strengthen governance and unlock growth opportunities, so they can continue to thrive for generations.”

For families considering alternative paths, there’s good news. According to Grant Thornton’s Agribusiness, Food & Beverage Dealtracker 2024, demand for Australian agribusiness assets remains strong both locally and globally, thanks to the quality of Australian assets. Australia ranks in the top five countries for global M&A activity, reflecting confidence in the sector. Transaction multiples remain resilient, offering attractive opportunities for those exploring external investment or sale.

National Agriculture Day is a time to celebrate the dedication, innovation, and resilience of farming families. Whether continuing the family legacy or exploring new opportunities, Australian agribusiness is well-positioned for a strong future.
