Grant Thornton builds Risk Consulting team to support clients with AML/CTF changes

Over the past few months, Grant Thornton has welcomed three new starters in the Risk Consulting practice.

The firm is delighted to announce Martin Stone (Partner), Annelies Homersham (Principal) and Marie Virueda (Director) recently commenced in Melbourne and Sydney. Martin and Annelies bring deep expertise in Anti Money Laundering / Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) frameworks, responding to regulatory change, and advisory work. These appointments follow the recent national reforms to the AML regime as it’s essential reporting entities fully understand their compliance obligations.

Martin Stone – Partner

As a Partner in the Melbourne team, Martin Stone brings 20 years of experience in financial crime risk management across banking sectors, financial services, and insurance. He provides risk and strategic advice while guiding businesses to ensure they’re compliant with Australia’s AML/CTF regulation requirements. His experience spans across compliance officer roles to leading and implementing enterprise-wise ML/TF risk assessments and Independent Reviews in large Australian reporting entities. Martin is passionate about working with business executives to give them confidence around understanding their control environment so they’re able to respond to financial crime and be proactive in mitigating risks.

Annelies Homersham – Principal

In May Annelies started as Principal in the Melbourne team, where she is focused on helping clients navigate the changing financial crime landscape in Australia. Her expertise lies in helping organisations deliver and embed complex change while understanding the legislative, political and organisational environment they’re operating within. With experience spanning over 20 years, Annelies has worked alongside local and global teams, large corporates, and government entities in financial services, professional services, media and entertainment. She cares about providing active leadership and strong strategies to ensure successful implementation and transformation programs in the rapidly changing AML/CTF landscape.

Jarrod Lean, Partner & National Head of Risk Consulting said: “It’s an exciting time to be working in the Risk Consulting practice at Grant Thornton. Our team is working diligently to guide new and existing entrants through the AML/CTF rules and regulations. With limited AML experts nationally, we’re proud to have Annelies and Martin join our highly experienced and knowledgeable advisors in the team – led by Neil Jeans and Katherine Shamai. We’re committed to building our AML capability in-house to strengthen the breadth and depth of skills and expertise within the market, and I’m looking forward to what this specialist team can achieve for our clients.”

Separately, with increasing need for businesses to be navigating ESG and Sustainability regulations, Marie Virueda has also joined the Risk Consulting practice as Director in our Sydney office to help guide businesses through these compliance shifts. Marie has built a career spanning over 10 years of professional services experience across Australia and the United Kingdom. She specialises in governance, risk management and controls, with a passion for helping organisations strengthen their ESG and sustainability frameworks.
