$2bn Breakthrough Victoria Fund, now investing in research, technology and innovation

Established in 2021, Breakthrough Victoria is an independent, Victorian-government owned, investment management company, with $2 billion in funds to invest in driving translational research and commercialisation across Victorian priority industry sectors. Investment is available across four key stages of the commercialisation lifecycle to ensure innovative ideas are supported from their early inception through to scale up and growth.

The Breakthrough Victoria Fund’s (the Fund) key objective is to strengthen Victoria’s existing position as an international leader in research, technology and translation; build world-leading capability (including human capital) in Victoria; and drive innovation through the development of systemic and effective translation and commercialisation pathways.

Types of Projects

Projects can include technologies with cross-sector application and commercialisation potential in domestic or export markets; industry growth through collaborative partnerships; and projects that deliver on economic, societal and environmental benefits.

Available investment

The Fund will consider a range of investments from $500,000 to $30 million for projects across four funding streams, with a flexible approach to investment depending on the opportunity. A wide range of businesses, research organisations, universities, joint venture and consortia are encouraged to apply.

Target industries supported

The Fund will target five priority industry sectors including:

Health and life sciences
Advanced manufacturing
Digital technologies
Agri-food
Clean economies

It will also focus investment in key innovation and employment precincts including: Parkville, Fisherman’s Bend, Clayton, Arden Macaulay, Bundoora and Waurn Ponds. However, significant opportunities elsewhere in Victoria will also be considered.
