Partner – Corporate & International Tax

Mark has nearly 20 years’ experience specialising in taxation advisory and compliance services for corporate, multinational and not-for-profit organisations. His previous roles include working as a corporate, international and not-for-profit tax advisor and serving as the in-house Tax Manager at a large multinational organisation for eight years. 

Mark has worked closely with executive teams, board members and shareholders across a broad range of taxation matters. His experience includes navigating cross-border and domestic taxation issues across various regions, including Australia, Europe, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, the United States, South America and Africa.

Mark is the Treasurer and member of ComItEs South Australia, an elected body representing the Italian community in the region, which is legislated by the Italian parliament and responds to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Italy. 

Experience

  • M&A, which has involved tax advisory work in respect of the application of the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) legislation, tax consolidation regime, share buy back legislation and tax due diligence services. Mark was a key tax advisor in relation to the largest M&A deals in South Australia in both 2016 and 2017.
  • Tax governance, including assisting in the development of a global tax governance planning and risk management tool and developing the very first tax governance framework for a large multinational in Adelaide that was well received by taxation authorities upon review.
  • Employment taxes, including advising organisations in respect of the application of the Employee Share Scheme (ESS) tax regime to shares and options issued to employees, Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), Superannuation guarantee, assisting not-for-profits access tax concessions across FBT, payroll tax, GST and income tax, and salary packaging for both corporate and not-for-profit entities.
  • Cross-border taxation issues for multinational organisations and individuals, including the application of the thin capitalisation regime, development of transfer pricing policies, application of tax residency rules for individuals and corporates, GST, tax treaties and withholding taxes in respect of cross border transactions.
  • Energy, Resources and Renewables expertise, including in relation to the application of the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) legislation, state ad valorem royalties, excise regime, and income tax matters impacting organisations in the Energy, Resources and Renewables space.

  • Master’s degree, Taxation from the University of New South Wales
  • Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the College of Laws
  • Practising Certificate to practice law in South Australia
  • Bachelor of Laws from the Adelaide University (formerly University of Adelaide)
  • Bachelor of Commerce, (Accounting) from the Adelaide University (formerly University of Adelaide)
