With a strong social compass, it is not surprising that Jason Feldman seeks to make a positive impact through his work.

Joining Grant Thornton as a purpose-driven vacationer five years ago, he made his passion for social impact and the for-purpose sector clear from the outset.

“I knew that Grant Thornton is well respected in the charitable sector. That’s my passion and aligns very strongly, so I thought ‘Okay, this is a good organisation to join’,” Jason said.

“From the very first day, I said, this is my passion, this is my interest, and from that opportunities have come. But I've also sought out opportunities and driven for them for myself.”

Today Jason is a Senior Associate in Risk Consulting and already participating in international projects in his specific areas of interest and specialty.

“I got involved with our Social Responsibility Committee (SRC) pretty much from the start. I took the lead in running the Movember campaign, and over the years I've taken more of a leadership role where you could call me program manager of the SRC,“ Jason said.

“I’ve also been able to observe the Grant Thornton Foundation Board, and through that I've also been able to take advantage of the staff volunteer days.”

“From the very first day, I said, this is my passion, this is my interest, and from that opportunities have come. But I've also sought out opportunities and driven for them for myself.”

Jason has used the volunteer days to participate in programs supporting young adults living with disability, specifically the getaway camp events where he helps to run the activities as well as being a companion for the campers.

He is also grateful for Grant Thornton’s support of his postgraduate study in social impact at the Centre for Social Impact at University of New South Wales. The firm has supported this study in a similar way to how they support staff who are undergoing their Chartered Accountant certification – both financially and with study days.

Most recently, Jason has been working at an international level with Grant Thornton colleagues in other countries to build the firm’s service offerings around ESG and sustainability – something that Jason said is entirely the result of one of the Directors in Sydney recognising that his passion for this area could make a valuable contribution.

“I’m probably the most junior person in the group but it’s been an incredible experience,” Jason said.

“I’m very lucky to not only have that kind of opportunity, but also people who are willing to look beyond my job title and support me because they know that I have a passion and interest in this area.”

For Jason, Grant Thornton is a dynamic environment with lots of different clients and interesting work. He also finds it a very collegiate place to work and “not a cutthroat culture”.

“One of our values is care, and I’ve found that to be quite true. I think people do care about their clients and care about doing good work for them,” Jason said.

Perhaps unsurprising for someone so strongly purpose-driven, Jason has high expectations of Grant Thornton and is quick to say that he still sees room for improvement…but that he believes “we’ll get there”.

He believes that Grant Thornton is somewhere that, if you have a clear vision of what you want, you can truly chart your own path.

“I have a very strong north star of where I'm moving towards, and I've been able to make Grant Thornton align with that, and to take that experience from Grant Thornton to help me get there,” Jason said.

“So even as a senior associate, I'm already working in the ESG space and I'm sitting on international calls. I don't know if I would have been able to do that if I worked somewhere else – somewhere with 10 times the people or 10 times the amount of red tape.

“People would see my senior associate title and just delete my email. But with Grant Thornton, I could do all this.

“That's the message.”
