In June 2020, the Federal Government passed legislation intended to improve the integrity of Australian business registers and to create a central Commonwealth Business Registry. A key component of the changes is the new mandatory Director Identification Numbers (Director ID) regime. Directors must apply for their own Director ID, as they will be required to verify their identity.

How to apply for your Director ID

We have developed some key information on Director IDs, together with detailed instructions on how to apply.

Where you are a Director of a company – and although many directors may have until November 2022 to apply – we encourage you to apply as soon as possible to allow sufficient time to address any issues, and to avoid any delays closer to the due date.

Keeping record of your Director ID

Once you have successfully applied and obtained your Director ID, it should be kept in a safe place and retained for your records. The ID details should be provided to the relevant corporation’s record holder.
